Welcome! I'm Sanjeev Memula and I was born in Hyderabad India…
My father, Dr. Narayana Memula graduated from medical school at Osmania Medical and decided to move our family to the United States to continue his medical career and to make a better life for us. He worked for many years at the Veteran's Administration Hospital, then went into private practice.
I was nearly 2 when we arrived in Memphis to start our new life in America. We wanted to give back to our new hometown and were very involved in the Indian community, becoming active founding members of the Telugu Association and the Indian Association. During this time I attended Presbyterian Day School and Memphis University where the nickname "Jeev" was bestowed upon me and stuck ever since.
Most of my Indian peers were expected to become physicians, but I was happy to be a trailblazer by becoming a lawyer. I was blessed to attend Washington University where I majored in history and philosophy. Then, I went on to graduate law school from University of Missouri at Kansas city in 1992.
Having graduated from Law school, I decidedly returned to Memphis to practice law with one goal. I absolutely wanted to become a Public Defender, and in 2000, with some unrelenting persistence I did just that. I became a Staff Attorney at Shelby County Public Defender's office and can still be found at 201 Poplar most every day.
During 18 years of representing my clients, winning jury trials and handling all types of cases including murder and other serious felony charges, I have worked on mastering the art of persuasion. I use it to convince jurors and judges to side with my clients' positions, while providing a better outcome for them.
Today, I live happily in Collierville, TN with my loving wife, Kavitha, who is an accountant and our sweet 3-year-old daughter Srija, who is the light of our lives. I'm motivated and excited beyond belief to be a part of our democratic process.
Thank you for joining me on my journey.
